Abstract

Subungual exostosis is the growth of bone tissue, most commonly affecting the halux. It presents as solitary edema of purple or firm skin color under the nail that can reach size of 8 to 10 mm in diameter. According to authors the X-ray exam confirms the diagnosis. The lesions develop mainly by trauma, in some cases spontaneous evolution occurs. Being the podiatrist the professional able to apply foot therapies as well as working with a multiprofessional team to improve the quality of life of individuals, this research was necessary in order to identify this pathology in female and male athletes who practice soccer. field. The work was performed through a comparative study based on incidence. It was a qualitative analytical and descriptive research, based on field research. The study setting was the Atletico Juventus Club of São Paulo, Brazil. The study population consisted of soccer players of both sexes aged over 18 years. Data collection was performed through individual interviews, with a script previously prepared. The data obtained were analyzed using the Thematic Content Analysis technique, guided by Minayo (2006). The results revealed that of the 22 final participants of the research only two females presented subungual exostosis. It showed that the vast majority have adequate weight between 60 to 70 pounds, and were aged between 18 to 20 years. It was found that 90% use closed shoes and 36.36% have already suffered foot trauma. Through research it was possible to verify that in male athletes, no subungual exostosis was identified, in female athletes a low index of subungual exostosis was identified.
